Now this is a party shop

Most newsagencies have a party section. Some go deep into this category selling costumes, balloon features and more. It is a space our channel was well known for decades ago, one today that has moved to specialist retail. In the US I have seen some amazing party shops, like this one on 14th Street in New York that I visited today. While the population density is different, you can over come that to an extent by creating an offer people will travel to shop.

I’ve just returned from Kansas City MO. The retail over there is fantastic, new ideas to try in my business over the coming months and different ways to build displays. The trip was awesome and I might just have to return at a later date. Happy retailing everyone.

With Big W making an aggressive play in the party space and K-Mart sort of following suit, how could a newsagent doing party gear differentiate themselves (since they probably cant match Big W on price)

Jonathan if I was to play in this space I would do so through licences you won’t see in Big W. I’d also do it through being niche in terms of range. For example, Big W will, chase the kids party market primarily I suspect whereas you could focus on adult parties.
