Magazines in Christchurch

christchurch.JPGI have been on the road in Christchurch (NZ) today and found this shop.

All they sell is magazines.

Excuse the front window as they have only just relocated. I’d guess that they have around 1,000 titles. The shop occupies around 90 square metres. They focus outside the major weeklies. Niche categories get a good play as do adult titles – which surprised me.

Opposite this magazine specialist is a convenience store with all the major weeklies on display at their front door.

Actually quite different. I have seen them in Australia and NZ – they are a customer. Great business.

Interesting to see that they use low level ‘greetings card style’ display units with blank walls above.

No aware of anything like this in the UK.

    Elliott,

The business is Canterbury Magazines. 03-377 0991
    246. Yellow Pages lists the address as High St Christchurch but they are in an arcade – next to their old location.

Thanks Mark, I’ll have to visit it sometime.

Its interesting that you mention the lack of newsagencies here. its always something I’ve found odd that newsagencies are plentiful in Australia but virtually non-existent here, which is strange as I remember reading some figures that New Zealand was going upwards in magazine sales, against the global downward trend. Maybe opening a newsagency in New Zealand could be an interesting idea.

When I first came across the blog and you were mentioning your home deleiveries of papers, I was a bit perplexed, I thought that other than the US, the newspaper itself was responsible for subscription, solely.

Something else which you may have noticed is the Lotteries network. They’re in supermarkets, dairies, service stations, book shops, everywhere and there is only 1 lotto company where as far as I can gather in Australia there are several.

Anyway, keep up the great blog, its very interesting.
