Online Sudoku and Crosswords at YouPlay

youplay.JPGYouplay.com is being advertised heavily on radio 3AW Melbourne and, I suspect, elsewhere around Australia. It’s a partnership between Lovatts and Southern Cross Broadcasting.

The website is easy to use and designed to suit its target visitor. I reckon it will be a huge success. The partnership with Southern Cross is excellent given their reach and the demographic of their radio stations.

While access to YouPlay is free, the good stuff it will cost punters $4.99 a month.

Newsagents are actively promoting YouPlay on every Lovatts magazine in store. That’s fair I guess – Lovatts are welcome to promote whatever they want on their product. However, it contradicts their view that YouPlay will attract an entirely different customer to the purchaser of Lovatts crossword and Sudoku magazines from newsagencies.

Hello again. How can we be contradicting a view that YouPlay will attract a different customer to our magazine purchasers when our magazine sales continue to increase? YouPlay is just an evolution of The Puzzle Player, an online puzzle site which Lovatts have operated for many years.

How many times must I make the point that an online side to our business complements NOT competes with the publishing arm? I’d have to be a dumb publisher if I’d compete with my own products in the dubious hope that an online replacement of the magazines will make me more money. I would never be willing to risk the bird in the hand for two in the bush. I just hope for all three birds one day!

    James,

An online replacement may not make you ‘more’ money … but it may put Lovvats in good stead for the future.

If print media slows and then ‘dies’, as most predict it will, you would no doubt be better off having on online revenue stream than no revenue stream at all.

I too would pushing the online format heavily if I were you. While you may see it predominantly as an “evolution” of the print product at present, it wil likely become far more in the future.

If you want to try out something new in sudoku, try shendoku, using the sudoku rules but playing two people, one against the other, like battleshipps. They have a free version to download at http://www.shendoku.com/sample.pdf . Anything else they are bringing out or they are working on you can find at http://www.shendoku.com or at they´r blog http://www.shendoku.blogspot.com . Have fun, I am. I specially like one slogan I heard about Shendoku: SUDOKU is like masturbation (on your own)…. SHENDOKU is like sex (it takes two).
