Supporting the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal

newsXpress announced to its member newsagents yesterday that it was in discussion with the Red Cross about the best way it could support its Bushfire relief Appeal.  Through a series of discussions and following many calls from similarly concerned organisations, the Red Cross has asked newsXpress to promote donations being made direct to the Red Cross.  newsXpress has provided its members with material explaining to customers where and how to donate directly as well as inviting them to leave change which newsXpress newsagents will donate direct to the Red Cross bushfire appeal.  Here is a copy of one of the counter notices provided to inform customers in newsXpress newsagencies:

We put a bucket on the counter yesterday morning marked “Help us fill this bucket for the Red Cross Victorian Bush Fire Appeal”

By close yesterday we had just on $300. We will leave it there for at least a week and hopefully will have collected a couple of grand just in small change.

People are more than happy to have an easy and painless way of contributing.

Fiona, Not everybody is insured (or insured enough) and not all insurance covers everything. Also, since so many people have lost loved ones AND their homes, they need help RIGHT NOW, not when insurance companies decide to pay out.

Fiona – If all you had were the clothes on your back, no house, possibly no job (both burnt down) or car and a mortgage on a house that no longer existed, how would you cope right now (financially, mentally and emotionally)?
Now, put your hand in your pocket and donate whatever you can afford, whether it be $1 or $100,000.

We’ve had a good look at our store and decided to donate school back packs filled with stationery, the large plastic trucks etc left over from christmas and anything else that is slow for us BUT NOT JUNK.

A collection tin is on the counter and we will be raffling of two giant Forever Friends Bears that were a gift from Hallmark.

This is not a burdon on us but a way to help those in immediate need and give us some measure of satisfaction for doing the right thing.

We give generously to oversea’s causes so should not neglect our ouw people in crisis.
