Bushfire benefit lottery draw

tatts_bushfire.jpgThe initiative from Tattersalls to donate their proceeds from this Saturday’s Tattslotto draw to the Alfred Hospital Burns Unit in support of the Bushfire Appeal is excellent and deserves kudos. I especially like that they have been transparent in their press announcement about what they expect to make – $3.5 million.

That said, I know some who will have an issue with promoting gambling as a way of raising funds for bushfire relief. I’d be interested to know what others think – especially as a retailer. Do we go hard and encourage gambling? I ask this because the fundraising aspect will attract new customers.  I am genuinely interest in what others think about this.

Concerns aside, we are actively promoting the Saturday draw in-store and have created a series of syndicates to help. Indeed, we are promoting everything connected with fundraising for the fires – Who, New Idea, Woman’s Day – as well as continued promotion of collecting loose change for the Red Cross.

Excellent initiative by Tatts. For all their faults (not least the latest one with the 7Eleven fiasco) you have to give credit where it’s due for supporting such a worthy cause. They could’ve just given a lump sum of a million or so, which don’t get me wrong would’ve been extremely generous as well. But to donate all the proceeds they make of this draw is more than anyone could expect. Lets hope all agents are actively promoting it as much as they can getting the awareness out there so we can have a great result for victims of the fires.

I was also pleased to hear we have another superdraw on the 28th of March. It was also good to see they made it a $20 mill draw and not the $18-$19 mill of the last few (not including the megadraw and last week of course)

It’s “only” 1-2 mill difference but for whatever reason the magic $20 million prize level i just find it generates more business in not only regular ticket sales but syndicates as well.

Those agents who have been in the business over 5 years or so would have noticed that the Superdraws don’t create as much interest/excitement as they once did and customers have seemed to become somewhat blase given the frequency of them and how often Super7’s and Powerball jackpot. In saying that though they’re still very lucrative and a great way to drive those sales up.

    Dean,
Interested in your comment about 7eleven, as we have just been advised that NSW lotteries is going into a nearby 7eleven and wondering about the impact on us. Also I agree with blase customers, some think $1 million on monday and wednesday not enough, others wait until at least 15 mill to buy a ticket.
