Wal-Mart reduces magazine range

In addition to moving magazines to the back of the store, Wal-Mart is cutting the number of magazines they carry.  see Folio for the story.  I am involved in a new newsagency project, we are targeting a magazine department of 750 pockets.

    Mark,
I would be very interested to get an idea of your product mix, as we have around the 750 pocket in our store but use a lot of waterfall and double facing to hilight fast movers. Are you planning to have 750 different mag titles in your store?

    Mark,
Is this a new geographical area for you? If so, how do you determine which magazines will be top sellers in that area?

We are a relatively new shop and I am finding that trial and error is the only way to find out which magazines will sell and which won’t and then again that can also be hit and miss as I have on one or two occasions taken a magazine off the shelf early only to have a customer come in and ask for it two days later.

Is this something that comes with experience?

B, we opened a new newsagency a few years ago and took what we were supplied for the first six months to learn the market. That worked well for us.

In this new location, we plan to be more selective and focus first on the top 200 magazines and then carefully select, from distributors who permit, titles which provide commercially viable depth to a segment.
