Herald Sun delay

The Herald Sun is late today.  We have been told that it could be 10am before we receive most of our stock.  A “RupertM” has commented on earlier blog post here with information about possible causes for the delay.

The printers need to wake up to themselves it’s 2010 boys! You do not want to give your customer even more reason to switch to online media most worrying Ipad apps. Its a disgrace & HWT (NEWS) are not going to tolerate this for much longer, jobs will be in jeopardy if this deliberate industrial chaos continues.
Action is not even concerning pay issues or job losses yet??
    Wake up!

we had our papers 3 hours late last wednesday because of a production issue with the fin review.
because we are in a regional area, all the papers come together, and the home deliveries were not finished till 9:30.
with late issues like this and magazines, i think a system of notifying agents about the delay is needed.
i had time to put a note into all the rolled papers explaining the situation, and in future they can go to our facebook page to find out up to the minute info.

In times when we get myriad blanket emails (and faxes grrr) about this and that – even bulk sizes (yay!), and for the seemingly endless procession of promotions, from our friendly local News offices, why is it that we hear nothing about significant delivery delays, which have the potential to greatly affect the running of our businesses for the days they occur?
When an email to our rep about recent delivery delays results in a defensive, contract-quoting email from the circ. manager, full of excuses as to what happened, and why, we just scratch our heads.

How much better would it be had we all got a quick email on the day, outlining the problem, and some encouragement along the lines of ‘we’re sorry about his, but do what you can’, rather than absolutely nothing. Better still to get a response from the rep, if nothing else, to say ‘leave it with me – someone will get back to you’. But no, any response to any real issues such as OHS, or delivery times we advise them of is met with direct emails or hand-delivered responses from a circ manager. There is always a contract quote and a pejorative comment somewhere, and absolutely no opportunity for discussion, or attempt at resolution. At least this time the size of our business avoided getting the piss taken out of it :-D.

When a circ manager quotes contracts, advising that further action may be sort (sic), if we carry out our ‘threat’ (WTF?), we are never surprised. Seems the bully-boy defensiveness is par for the course, in our experience. To paraphrase, the main statement in this latest directive would be: ‘We can stuff up any time we like. We make no apology – hell, we just don’t give a toss. But if you have any problems with your delivery times, even if it’s all our fault, we can terminate your contract’. Alrighty then. I think he’s made himself clear.

Let us now be clear. We made no threat. We simply stated that if papers are not here by a certain (reasonable) time, we cannot deliver them by a certain (contracted) time. And in that case, deliveries will have to wait until it is possible for one of us to leave the store.
Mr manager, you’ll also find in your own contract quote, the requirement that we deliver as soon as “possible”. Pardon us if our time machine is still in for its 15,000km service. To quote Cher, if we could turn back time, our contractual obligations would be fulfilled no worries. But because our time machine is suffering similar problems to printing presses, we will get to it when other obligations in relation to our livelihood are also seen to. How dare some agro little man turn around and claim control of my business for absolutely no good reason. If his threat wasn’t so pathetic and insidious, it would be laughable. And if action was to be sought in this instance, I don’t think the courts would be able to suppress a giggle, let alone details.
It is exchanges like this that make being a newsagent challenging. There is absolutely no need or excuse for the responses we get from this guy and his big-city counterpart, whose modus operandi has been to ring up and shout. Until such time as we are treated with due respect by these guys, any more tripe dished up to us will not be taken seriously, and will be made public. We do business with a lot of other companies, and if issues arise they are dealt with as adults. Never, ever have we had the kind of grief from anyone else, but this mob. My most beastly employers over the years aren’t a patch on this lot. And guess what – you’re not our employer. You don’t own us. It’s our business, our hard work, and our investment. Keep your grubby hands off. You’ve got enough control of it already. You’re not getting our soul and self-respect as well. Oh, and we’re still waiting for footy card credits. It’s ok to just take a grand or so out of our bank, but where is our money? Do we have to send data a third time?
