ACP magazines has this morning announced a new program for newsagents which offers additional margin for growth achievment.
The Growth Rewards program will be available to members of the ACP Connections program. Bonus margin kicks in at 5% year on year growth with two steps in the program offering significantly more margin than provided today.
The ACP announcement breaks the 25% margin barrier for magazines. It makes growth the core focus for newsagents.
For years in this place and elsewhere I have called on magazine and newspaper publishers to treat newsagents as business people. This announcement from ACP does just that.
I was briefed on the program last week and was impressed with the work that ACP had put into it and the supporting materials to be provided to newsagents. My understanding is that all Connections members will receive details off the program over the next couple of days.
Fantastic, this is a real fillip to the industry and throws down a gauntlet for us to pick up. The days of stack and forget are over.
about time things have changed ,i think the idea is great ,
While the achieving greater than 25% margin is a considerable stretch, it is an opportunity for all newsagents. The test will be how many of us embrace this.
im keen to get at it, but not sure that with the national year on year decline in mag sales how plausable it is to actually maintain 5% year on year growth. might be able to really push hard for a while to get some initial growth, after that am not so sure. need to wait for the fine print to be released to see how it will work. is a step in the right direction, i just fear we are starting along way back from the pace setters in this race.
ian, It’s off a low base. Also, cookbooks are included so the opportunity is good.
iwas kicked out of connectionprogram after done $300,000 shopfit and could not provide major display area for acp. the bright side i don’t have to worry any hassle from the merchandisers.
ERIC,
We faced the same situation. We completed a building extension and a complete shopfit. ACP didn’t like it because we had a ‘no POS instore’ policy and kicked us out of the program with a rather rude short-sighted letter.
well i am not sure how to become a member i cannot even recall any issues when joining up but i know i have never had a merchandiser come for a visit or any one at all contacting me to see if i do promotions . is it a sales based programe ? i thought any one could be in it
pleased we were not the only one that ACP did not consider a new $250000 shopfit met their requirements and cancelled our connections membership.
i guess acp loves old run down dimmed light shops and full with cluttered posters inside and outside the shops.
Regardless of what may have happened in the past, today’s announcement is an opportunity to revisit Connections to access a better margin. I expect some in ACP would agree that their rigid approach to display space was inappropriate.
who thinks that the all new Simply to good to be true #6 is just Simply to expensive … i had planned on doing up a great display for it but i am not so sure i want to go over the top with extra stock to make the display look good at $ 28.00 a pop i am not sure if it will sell as good as the rest of the series
So Mark are you saying their rigid approach to display space has changed? Because as a connections member I am still required to display the selected title and why shouldn’t I be?
Maybe let ACP speak for themselves to the people on the program rather than speaking for them. All the correct terms and conditions need to be considered not just the little bit you put out there.
Shaun,
In the book trade when a new titale came through or an old one revisted (because of unusual publicity release of movie or interview with author) the saying was “stack em High and sell ’em through” It works with magazines as well the bigger the display the better the sales. This is what sale or return is all about. Why not “give it a go” a tell this forum how you went.
Graeme yes i am going to give it a shot i hope i am wrong about the price point . i am going to order more stock and just go for it
Mary, I don’t claim top speak for ACP, never have. ACP wants magazine sales. Newsagents can do a range of things to get the sales. It may be possible to convince ACP that a non traditional approach which drives sales satisfies them.
does anyone know where i can buy the new 4 ingrediants book from ?

Selling very well for us, it has been avery strong series.
It seems to be a two tiered approach for connections and emerald members. We are only a small agency and do not qualify for emerald membership. Just received our offer and it is only for extra connections points – no extra margin offered.
John I think you may be confusing the network Rewards program with the ACP Growth rewards program. They are quite different.
are they mailing ,emailing or faxing these offers i still have not heard anything about it but am looking fiorward to seeing what is on offer
shaun s – 4 ingredients should be available from GNS as of next week.
thank you shelley , i ended up giving them a call . other than gns i could not find any one selling it
i received the acp offer in the mail today , it seems like a good deal to me . It is good to see magazines moving forward
