Stationery moves for newsagents

With Wilson Stationery and Dixons having just been taken over by Stationers Supply, newsagents are left with GNS and Stationers as core stationery suppliers – except for those who buy from Corporate Express (Staples).

In my view it is imperative that newsagents support GNS as it is the national stationery supplier we own.

I was fortunate a few months ago to meet with the entire GNS field team at their national conference and like some other suppliers, their work for newsagents goes beyond their core focus of stationery.  It is this broader support which is vital to the channel.

We try to but sometimes they are not even in the ball park eg i needed 100 usb sticks i saved almost $5 per stick from going elsewhere . i showed my rep and he said no way could we come close to that price . What has me confused is this GNS must have huge buying power with all the newsagents attached to them but yet i could buy from some small shop down south that is not even a wholesaler for way less than i can buy from my wholesaler .Thats just one example there are a lot more . My question is are they getting and not sourcing the deals thinking that newsgnts will support them no matter what ?

we have not seen a GNS rep since we left the GNS run marketing group in 2005. They still visit the other newsagents in our town but not here.
Maybe it is just my charming personality?

We try to do the right thing and support GNS…I’m with you shaun, there is alot of lazy, old, tired and not very smart people at GNS both Sydney and Melb. And There are very few good ones. It ammuses me how much prices can differ between sydney and melb. I have asked my rep (When I see him once every 6 Mths) about a cheaper Usb brand. Our Aust post sells 4 gig for $12.95 thats cheaper than we buy for. We try to beat Officeworks and Aust post by offering good service to our customers and keeping up with all the mod-cons but i’m affraid we keep getting let down by GNS. The Biggest disapointment is that Vana & Anf are very much the same…. Its a pitty the can’t work together for the good of newsagencies and make it a better industry!!

We are a small town in Central West NSW and I can rate the service we get from our rep as outstanding. He calls personally each fortnight and can be contacted at anytime.
Orders over the web are delivered within 2 days. Staff at GNS 90% of time are excellent.
At times we do feel pricing could be better and with this we get ink through Dynamic.
We feel that the Officesmart pricing of which any newsagent can use is more than competitive on comparable baskets with any of our competitors.

We need to remember that enwsagents own GNS. Anyone with issues, concerns, questions should get involved.

tottaly agree i have no problem with service or delivery from GNS but having friendly GNS staff does not make me any more money .I am here to make money and if GNS cannot supply me stationary at even close to being competitive i have to go else where . Just for fun google 4gb usb stick and i guarantee you will find something in the $10 mark .

We converted from Stationers to GNS 4-5 months after purchasing our business. Sure, GNS aren’t the cheapest on everything but I find that thier delivered prices are generally cheaper than the pick up prices from Stationers and now only buy from Stationers now if GNS don’t have what I need in stock. Add to that the convenience of internet ordering and electronic invoicing and GNS win hands down for time saved as well as competetive pricing. There are cheaper suppliers for computer related products and we use them but generally I could not be happier with GNS.

We use GNS But why the antiquated pricing system ie +2% if you have it delivered or pay on account. Surely the surcharge should be built in. You dont know where you stand. The website also needs a little work as it can be slow and difficult to find the product. Try putting in USB. Staff are very helpful.

In SA we still have Ancol (which is a co-operative owned by newsagents) and it was getting tired and ordinary but last weekend they had their first trade fair under a new CEO and it was excellent. New product was shown and our reps are already offering it to us (there were specials at the show). I think we all need to lift our game including our suppliers but here in SA ANCOL are doing a great job.

We have a new broom sweeping clean.
