Why would newsagents promote the Adelaide Advertiser?

Check out the poster the folks at the Adelaide Advertiser wanted newsagents to put out the front of their newsagencies last week to promote the newspaper.

So much for the news of the day selling the news.

No wonder some newsagents refused to put the poster out.

Posters provided by newspaper publishers should be for promoting news and not for extending the reach of an advertiser’s campaign for which they pay the publisher.  If publishers do want newsagents to become outlets for promoting such deals then they need to negotiate commercial terms with newsagents.

I would refuse to put this poster out in my newsagency.

    Not a chance.
We have been “selective” with our cages, for a long time.
How stupid do they think we are?

The West Australian has been running a competition promoting the paper. The entry form required name and phone number. My regular customer who buys a paper from me everyday came in yesterday to say he had a phone call offering the paper delivered for $6pw which is less than I pay. Worse is they are pinching my customers with their promotion not even getting new customers. He declined the offer saying he enjoyed the excercise and the contact at the shop. The person on the other end couldnt believe it.

Wally, Qld Newspapers has been doing that here for ages. I keep getting customers changing from regular fee paper deliveries to highly discounted ones offered by direct telemarketing from QNP. Lately they are even offering free magazine subscriptions as well to get people to switch.

Makes me wonder what idiot thought to give an already long term customer a reason to pay less for a product than what they were already happily paying.

I do laugh though when some switch back to dealing directly with me after they’ve been mis/incorrectly charged by QNP or have to deal with putting stops and starts in through them.
