Ironman magazine oversupplied by Gordon and Gotch

At best we sell four copies of each issue of Ironman magazine. A review of the sales history indicates that a fair supply would be no more than six copies.  Unfortunately the ‘magazine experts’ at Gordon and Gotch disagree and have increased us from six to eight to ten to twelve copies over the last four issues.  There is no apparent reason for the increase in supply to twelve copies in our Ironman magazine sales data.  The only excuse I can think of is that Gotch would prefer the excess stock be in our newsagency (and others?) and not in their warehouse.

To those at Gotch who think I am picking on them, don’t give me or any other newsagent reason to claim that you oversupply. Start to supply us on equitable terms.  Your CEO claimed that you don’t oversupply yet I continue to see evidence of it in my newsagency and other newsagencies I work with.

Newsagents want what magazine publishers want, an equitable supply model which is driven by sales.

You have the data, use it.

There are many titles being oversupplied by Gotch at the moment. I have spent far too much time changing future supply and early returning oversupplied titles, but today’s surprise was the rudest shock to date. I have been sent 13 copies of Pig Hunting DVD #2. 13!!!! I received 6 copies of #1 and sold just 1 copy. #1 was recalled in Week 48. Even if I had managed to sell all of the first issue’s supply, to more than double supply on the second issue of any title is just poor form. Shame Gotch!!

Wendy, this from a company which says publicly that they do not oversupply.

Wendy I am the same. #1 received 3 copies returned 3 copies. Today received 7 copies. How is this justified?? This is one of many examples I get EVERY magazine delivery day.

Since their computer system obviously doesn’t work, maybe the readers of this blog could have a fundraising drive to buy them the latest calculator from GNS

    Issue 2 received 9 ???????????
    Not oversupplied ???????????
Although they are all on the shelver for the moment, 5 or 6 will be returned early based on the first issue sales. Thats 2/3 oversupply.

That seems to be the only way to control oversupply. Nothing else seems to work!!!
If everybody who is constantly oversupplied did this they might realise that IT IS an issue.

Mark, what do the publishers think about the distribution model for their titles?

Any publisher could talk to any newsagent about over-supply & be provided with blatant multiple examples. How frustrating must it be for the publisher to be charged to have the title distributed, only to have copies returned because the incorrect number was sent to start with?

What does G&G, or Network, say to the publishers to justify their distribution model?

GG and network say to publishers (and newsgents) Jump…..we all say how high.

    no further communications possible.

Narelle, see my posts under ‘Why the increase in The Australian Coin & Banknote?’ on 6 December this year.

hateBullies, you are wrong to think that further communication between publishers and distributors is not possible.

It is possible and it does happen, but not all publishers do it.

Publishers are definitely reading posts like this. I am confident that the engagement by publishers on newsagent circulation challenges will continue to rise as a focus for them in 2012.
